scrum meeting can also be called a daily stand-up and is basically a framework for making decisions and moving things forward. However, since the Scrum guide doesn’t specify the exact methods to be applied in a scrum meeting, mistakes do happen, which can lead to a waste of time and a backfiring of the Scrum philosophy. These mistakes are listed so that managers and bosses can take note and avoid them while conducting scrum meetings:

  1. Status In A Scrum Meeting
    While past work should be one of the three main questions answered in a scrum meeting, details have no place there. The fifteen-minute time limit should be strictly implemented; if everyone would report their daily progress and try to one-up the other, then this is a waste of both time and the meeting itself. Since scrum has its sprint retrospective events and its sprint review to for the analysis of past work, there is no need for discussion upon during the scrum meeting itself.
  2. The Scrum Master Starts Managing
    Scrum is all about the team or the individual worker managing and organizing themselves. The scrum master should not act as their manager by giving them order, or start to plan how the team should achieve a certain goal or project. This is so that the teams know what their responsibility is, and how to look within to find solutions to their problems.
  3. Making The Scrum Meeting About The Master
    The scrum master should only be there to make sure that the meeting goes in an organized fashion, and that it is implemented correctly. While he or she has to be at every scrum meeting, including the daily one. However, this does not mean that the SM gets to boss things around or demand anything from the teams. The sprint status is what the SM updates the teams about. The SM also goes over the activities of the day before in a brief manner, so as to give proper feedback to the teams.



  4. Making Plans
    Nowadays, sprints normally last only one or two weeks. As this leaves little room for delay, a scrum meeting is a quick method to decide what should be done or developed, and a sprint review meeting is held to analyze the work done and plan the next sprint. There is also a sprint retrospective meeting for evaluating the importance of the Scrum meetings and how the general process could be made better. Planning like in these last two meetings has no place in a scrum meeting. In particular, the daily scrum meeting should not be held for the purpose of planning ahead, s the Scrum guide already details where and when these problems should be addressed.
  5. Technicalities Are Discussed
    Any technical problems or discussion should be dealt with when a related problem arises. If such a problem is reported during a scrum meeting, it should be noted and set aside to be solved after the meeting.
  6. Meetings Held Outside Of Work
    The main focus of the scrum philosophy is to get decisions made and developments progressed so that teams can get back to work as soon as the meeting is over. Time is of the essence and not to be wasted in holding extra meetings, but to get to the crux of a meeting within the daily routine itself.
  7. Three Core Questions Ignored
    A scrum meeting means a briefing on what was done yesterday, what is supposed to be done today and whether and obstacles arose in the completion of these goals. If these three elements are not set, the scrum meeting will lose its organizational and efficiency value.

Scrum meetings are a growing trend for companies who have a fast-paced routine and a packed schedule. A scrum meeting is a sort of standing meeting where the participants have to get to the point as quickly as possible so that everyone can get back to their routine as fast as they can. If people carrying out the scrum meeting can be led into a different direction than what a scrum meeting is supposed to be, it can limit how much it can accomplish.
